The South Korean legislator is considering a partial amendment bill to the Law on Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs. The bill seeks to make it mandatory to include not only the total amount of sugar but also the type of sugar and the amount of added sugar in the nutritional composition on food labels.
In concrete terms, the bill states that “a person who manufactures, processes, distributes, or imports food products shall label the comparative sugar content of food products as prescribed. The labelling shall also indicate whether and how much added sugar is included. Necessary matters concerning the standards and methods of displaying comparative sugar content pursuant to paragraph (1) shall be prescribed by Prime Ministerial Decree… food products that do not have a comparative sugar content label in accordance with the law shall not be manufactured, processed, fractionated, imported, packaged, stored, displayed, transported or used for business purposes or sale”.
