On 14th July 2023, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) together released assessments of the health impacts of the non-sugar sweetener aspartame, which, despite the “limited evidence” for carcinogenicity in humans (Group 2B), classified aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans and recommend an acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg body weight.
The evaluations were based on a range of sources such as peer-reviewed papers, governmental reports, and studies. According to the IARC and JECFA, they will continue to monitor new research on the human health impacts of aspartame exposure.
Reportedly the US FDA disagrees with the conclusion and denies the existence of any safety concerns over the consumption of aspartame.
