Japan has launched a public consultation period to gather feedback on the proposed revisions to the 10th Edition of the Official Standards for Food Additives.
Among other issues, the draft maintains the current limitations of the use of acesulfame potassium:
- Foods with health claims (only tablets): 6.0 g/kg
- Chewing gum: 5.0 g/kg
- Sweetened bean pastes, confectionery, and fresh confectionery: 2.5 g/kg
- Ice cream, jam, sauces, pickles, edible ices, and flour paste: 1.0 g/kg
- Fruit liqueurs, miscellaneous alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, milk beverages, lactic acid bacteria beverages, and fermented milk (or diluted beverage after dilution): 0.50 g/kg
- Sugar substitutes for coffee, tea, and other foods used directly as a substitute for sugar: 15 g/kg
- Other foods: 0.35 g/kg
Nevertheless, these maximum limits do not apply to foods approved to be labeled for special dietary use.
The deadline for submission of opinions is 12th May 2023.
